Mysogynistic Harmatia
Ted Bundy, Eminem, Jack the Ripper, and.....Hamlet? The first three names in this listwould be widely accepted when you are listing possible misogynists, however mostpeople probably don't think that Hamlet fits in this category. I believe that this verycharacter trait is Hamlet's most prominent flaw. He treated the women in his life withbrutality and callousness. Gertrude and Ophelia were the recipients of many slurs andhateful actions made by Hamlet. He also personified any negative aspect of life, such as This tragic flaw is also referred to as a harmatia. Aristotle gives us the meaning ofharmatia to be: a personal tragic flaw that is in some way self inflicted. Hamlet's tragicflaw is his hatred and condemnation of women. He inflicts this upon himself in manyways. He jumps to conclusions and believes that certain women in his life are doingthings just to spite him. He judges the decisions of the women in his life without talkingto them about it or asking them any questions. (Aristotle) ( Gertrude is the object of multitudes of bitterness coming from Hamlet. He alsoaccuses her of killing Hamlet Sr. In this manner Hamlet loses his sanity for amoment and tried to kill Gertrude. He has somewhat of a physical confrontation with Gertrude. Then, when he findsthat she could be a tool of her father's in order to get information. I feel that Hamlet's harmatia is misogyny because itappears to be the one factor that contributes the most to his demise. He is appalled withhow she is behaving with Claudius and how she is enjoying her life now even though Hamlet Sr. At this point in the play all his previous feelings thathave been pent up come bursting forth. Hamlet makes comments just against women in general. If Hamlet had notcondemned Ophelia, she would not have killed herself. Because heconfronted Gertrude so violently, Claudius decided that Hamlet must be killed.
