Music Censorship
Music censorship has been a very controversial subject for the past two or more decades. Many people believe that the words and phrases in songs are inappropriate. But on the other hand, some think that it is their right to say what they want. The argument in music censorship is basically, are kids affected by inappropriate songs? People who say that they are not affected, are very wrong, because what people listen does affect what they do, how they dress and how they act. There are many songs that I think children should not be able to listen to, for example, Nirvana's song Rape Me. This song is played on the radio, where anybody can hear it. Also, Turn Me On Mr. Deadman, by Union Underground. I believe that kids should not listen to this. They are too young to listen to songs like that because they don't have enough common sense to tell what is right from wrong, and they might take what the artist of the song is saying, literally. Today, many people feel that the lyrics presented in songs are inappropriate f
People in favor of censorship believe that parents cannot restrain their children from going out and buying a CD. When Elvis first came out, he was viewed as a wild man, but he ended up with a picture of his face on a postage stamp. In fact, a group of parents formed and organization called the Parent's Music Resource Center (PMRC). Jimi Hendrix was looked at as a radical but he entered into the music hall of fame. Not only is it a matter of legality, but censorship is also a matter of personal preference. Music is simply a reflection of negativity, but it does not have the power to create social problems. They are stuck on the idea of "freedom of speech" and believe that a person's ideas should not be censored or rejected. Both, Jimi and Elvis were very good musicians. I believe that music should be censored to a certain degree. For example, they should check id and make sure the person who is buying a cd is over a certain age. They believe that media, in particular music, has a major influence on children, causing them to be violent, abuse drugs, partake in premarital sex, etc. The government started to label music CD's, but people say that those labels actually make kids go out and buy it because it has the label. They will take it the wrong way and get themselves into trouble. The debate over music censorship will never end.
