Comparison essay on Loneliness of the longdistance runner and chariots of fireI am looking at the respective personalities of the two characters and the influenceswhich shaped their respective lives, their attitudes towards authority, their motivation inrunning and their respective ideas concerning 'victory' and 'defeat'.Both Colin and Eric's lives have been shaped by their surrounding and the area's inColin was raised in lower class society. He grew up thinking that the way to live was theway of crime. He was brought up to believe that cops and other authority figures wherenot there to help but only to make things worse for you in the long run. He is loyal andhonest in ways only he and others of lower class society can understand. Colin leads alife of crime and dishonesty to everybody but himself. Eric on the other hand was raised in a lower class society but on the side of a missionary. He learned to respect each side of higher and lower class. He is honest and loyal to but ina very different way then Colin. He is honesty in its purest form. Eric obides by GodsLaw whereas Colin obides by his owe rules. Eric is a free spirit. "He run's like a wild
Colin finds thegovernor humorous in most aspects too, making a joke of everything the governorbelieves in and turning what the governor wants into a joke of his own with ridiculingnames and plots to make the governor generally look like a fool; "The pop-eyedpotbellied governor said to a pop-eyed potbellied Member of Parliament who sat next tohis pop-eyed potbellied whore of a wife that I was his only hope for getting the BorstalBlue Ribbon Prize Cup for Long Distance Cross Country Running (All England), which Iwas, and it set me laughing to myself inside, an I didn't say a word to any potbelliedpop-eyed bastard that might give them real hope, though I knew the governor anywaytook any quietness to mean he'd got that cup already stuck on the bookshelf in his officeamong the few other mildewed trophies. Hestates in a passage from the bible "He that honors me, I will honor" saying mainly thatGod has given him the gift of speed to run and this motivates him to run to win for thepleasure of God. od is a factor in all aspects of Eric's life. The two do share one commonfactor though. 35; We see Colins plan for getting back at society and the governor start tounfold here and he awaits his winning/losing race. He runs becausehe has a liking for thinking, something he has never done before the Borstal but losingthe race for the governor also motivates him. In saying these things he showsdisregard for the rest of respect he should show authoritative figures. 28 and also by his first impression on the on the officer whoquestioned him " He was like Hitler in the face, right down to the paintbrush tash, exceptthat being six-foot tall made him seem worse. Eric in God and Colin in his people. " He shows us here that even the people that set out to make his city better, politicians, are not even worthy of respect.
