The land of the Louisiana Purchase was a vast unexplored area, which changed in ownership many times. This land was first owned by France but was turned over to Spain in the treaty that ended the French and Indian war. In, 1800 Bonaparte secretly acquired the Louisiana land from Spain. With popular sovereignty the Louisiana Purchase was admitted as a slave state. This purchase caused uproar in America, which slowly got split up into free states and slave states. When Jefferson learned of this he was upset that the barbaric french were his neighbors. This started the division of north and south because the south wanted the land to be admitted to the union as a slave state but the north wanted this land to be a free state. 192-93) When Livingston and Monroe presented Bonaparte with the deal he offered the entire Louisiana land for fifteen million. Jefferson thought the only way to keep America out of conflicts was to buy New Orleans from France. The South was trying to spread slavery all over America but the North wanted to abolish slavery for good.
