Afghan Women Discriminated
Discrimination Against Women of Afghanistan For many women all over the world discrimination is a serious problem. The US has shown some progress when it comes to this issue by allowing women to file lawsuits against discrimination. The most famous of them being sexual harassment lawsuits. Although the US has shown some improvement, that isn't the case in all countries, especially in Afghanistan. For the women of Afghanistan being discriminated against is a way of life. Women are seen as second class citizens under the rule of men and these men are the cause virtually all of the problems that the women of this country face today. It would probably be best to start of with a little history of Afghanistan so that way the events that lead up to the Taliban taking over are better understood. Up until the 1970's Afghanistan was an anarchy, the king at the time was Zahir Shah. In 1973, while in Italy Shah was overthrow by a relative, it was at that time that the mujahedin(holy warriors) were in their birthing process (Encylopedia Americana). In 1978, Communism was attempted to be important into Afghanistan with Soviet Union aid. However, in 1979, Kabrak Karmal who was the president at the time asked for Soviet
It was at that point that the Taliban government instituted it's sexist policy under the guise of religious observance. There are health problems that evolve due to these acts. They can't seek medical attention because under the Taliban rule a woman can not be seen by a doctor because almost all of them are males. Women have been infected with chancre sores, syphilis and even AIDS. According to that same article, on one occasion a Taliban member asked for anal sex, the prostitute refused, and later that day, that member brought many of the local police to arrest all of the workers in the brothel. These abortions are usually not done properly and in many cases women have died or become very ill. In 1989, the Soviet Union withdrew from the country they had invaded. The Taliban opposes any type of birth control so many of the women who get pregnant are not married and they are forced to get illegal abortions. Several groups like Amnesty International, a human rights organization, have reported honor killings in many of the Arabic countries and are trying their best to get justice for these women that die at the hands of their family members. The Taliban has forced many of the men to fight wars in the northern part of Afghanistan so that the Taliban can expand their power. Meena, the founder of RAWA was assassinated in her struggle to try to let the women of Afghanistan and Pakistan have a voice. (NY Times) Regrettably the women get word that their husbands are dead.
