During that time, the Communist Party was spreading through the United States of America. Many people remember it as a time where the mention of Communism might get them fired; they can also remember the major influence it had on Hollywood pictures.Several important people in Hollywood, as other businesses, were involved in the Communist Party. The blacklist was a way of refusing "to hire people in the entertainment industry during the 1940s and 1950s because they had been accused of being members of the Communist Party or having connection

They held public hearings to investigate the Communist influence in the motion picture industry. It was his way of trying to explain to the United States that he was right for handing over the names of Communist Party members to the HUAC. The issue was not brought up again for many years. They were sent to prison for six months to a year and were fired from their jobs and the film studios announced they would not hire Communists. Kazan resigned shortly afterward saying the situation was created "to stop the most dangerous thing the Party had to deal wit: people thinking for themselves. Kazan was a young member of the Communist Party in the Group Theater in New York. He gave the names of several Communist members to the HUAC during a public trial. The film portrays Terry Malloy in the same situation as Kazan and trying to blacklist the people who may have too much power. " (Berstein) Several men did not cooperate with the HUAC and were blacklisted. Among them was a man named Elia Kazan. The blacklist lasted until the 1960s.
