The Fantastiks
The Fantastiks is the longest running play in American theatre history. I thought I was not going to enjoy the play, but I couldn't of been more wrong. I thought the play was hysterical; it had a simple story line that anyone could understand. I really liked that the themes of the play dealt with real life issues; to me the play is a parody of Romeo and Juliet. It was quite comical, I also think it had a psychological side to it. The two fathers manipulated their kids into falling in love with each other by using reverse psychology, but then in turn their plan backfired on them. I think the entire play was cleverly put together, the characters parts were well written and the musical scores were wonderful. The play consisted of eight characters. Erica Piccininni played the role of Luisa, the young girl. Luisa was an aggressively romantic; I think she acted like a spoiled, crazy teenager. As most teenagers her age, she wanted to defy her parent. I hope I didn't act like this when I was younger, but chances are I probably did. Jared Zeus played the role of Matt, the young boy. Matt was a dreamer; he attended college but didn't really care for the courses he was taking. He was more interested in writin
He knew exactly when to change personalities/moods. They used a stage within a stage, this is the first time I ever saw this, it was odd at first, but with the lighting they used and their props, it made me focus on the stage within the stage and forget about all the clutter around it. After being beaten, hurt and defeated by their first life experiences and cruelties of the real world, they return to the safe haven that they once knew and had together. It lets you see the thoughts, feelings and emotions you have when you are an adolescent, but at the same time you see the thoughts, feelings and emotions of parent(s), overprotective parent(s), who want the best for their child. I think the theme of the play is to "Let your children live their lives, they will make mistakes, but find their way in due time. He was frivolous and somber at the same time. I think the songs gradually progress the story. The two adolescents go their separate ways and they experience the harsh realities of the real world. At first he seemed very hardheaded, stubborn and he seemed to have a short temper, but by the middle of the first act you could see that he was really a caring father that had a big interest in his daughters happiness. The characters that I enjoyed the most were the two fathers and the mute. From the moment the play began to the moment it ended, the actors had me completely involved in their world; they became the characters. I would recommend this play to anyone who wants to see an adolescent love story and the connection within a family, and enjoys having a good laugh. " I think every protective parent tries to do this with his or her own child, but children need to make mistakes and find their own way.
