Gun Control
In general, guns have been a major problem for years upon years. Thethreat of guns in cities and towns is astonishing. Many people inthe United States are fighting to ban guns everywhere, others thinkthey should have the right to own a gun with no questions asked. Considering the amount of handgun deaths, many people ask thequestion "Are guns killing people or are people killing people?" Many people are in the fight to gain stricter laws on guns, Yet justas many are opposed to the idea of stricter laws. Guns started to become an issue in the late 1970s and early1980s. In 1977 guns were the weapons used in approximately 70% ofthe murders in the United States.(Encarta Online) 60% of all murdervictims in the United States (about 12,000) were killed by firearms,and 70,000 were injured. During the early 1980s "Hip Hop" and "Rap"became popular. This increased the number of gun conflicts greatlybecause of the image of a rapper.(Dennis, Debate) Heavily populatedcities had an increasing amount of gangs during this time.(Dennis, Debate) The gangs would sell drugs and use guns to back them up if adeal went bad.(Dennis, Debate) Guns were easily accessed due to the
(Dennis, Debate) On July 19, 1994 the NRA (National RifleAssociation), wrote a letter to President Clinton stating that theyare "American citizens" on "American soil" who should have "Americanrights. (Encarta Online) The number of gunattacks has increased since 1989 to 15,456 per year. Ifcriminals have less access than so do we, if we the people have moreaccess than so do the criminals. (Political Wag) Yet, the law is not perfect, over 120,000 felonsattempted to buy a gun, and only 15 were prosecuted. (HCI) said, "The SecondAmendment poses no threat to the laws affecting the privatepossession of firearms, and this may well be the most settledproposition in constitutional law. "(Political Wag) Lastly, "Guns just provide a way for the averageindividual to defend themselves, even if the "bad guy" is bigger, or if there are more than one, If you are armed, you areequal. (Gun Control, AskJeeves) This group played a major role in the defeat of gun ownerlicensing. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), in1999 562,870 victims of serious crimes, including rape, sexualassault, robberies, and aggravated assault, stated they faced anoffender with a firearm. TheSenate Gun Control Language, that didn't pass, would have requiredbackground checks for firearms at gun shows, the ban of imports ofgun clips that could hold more than ten bullets, and requiredhandguns to be sold with a trigger lock for safe storage. (Encarta Online) More than two million times a yearpeople use guns in self defense to protect themselves, and usually itis only a warning shot. (Policy Almanac) The Second Amendment states: "A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed. "(Political Wag) These people argue that law abiding citizenswould be at greater risk if there were more laws againstguns. I think that this should have passed, there is noreason it shouldn't.
