             Imagery Used In "The Metamorphosis"
             Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, is based on a man's transformation into a giant beetle-like insect. Gregor Samsa, the main character, as a symbol to portray the common theme, or idea of "the outcast" in society. He uses startling and bizarre images to illustrate this concept. In Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis, symbolic imagery is key in illustrating his idea of how society portrays those who are an outcast from society.
             The novel opens with Gregor Samsa's transformation. "When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin." From the beginning, Kafka makes it clear that Gregor is an outcast. The reader is informed that until that morning, Gregor has been an ordinary person, a traveling salesman, and the images of his room are carefully crafted. In the beginning, he does not realize how dramatic his transformation had been. Upon hearing the hissing sound in his voice, and scratching the itching up on top of his belly, he realized that something was not right. He only thought of being late to work, ruining his perfect attendance record, blaming his physical changes on nothing more than the first sign of a bad cold.
             When Gregor finally realizes that he is not dreaming, he is faced with devastation, as well as a house full of family members in confusion, as well as emotional distress. He has yet to open the door of his bedroom, which he has refused to do, despite his family's care and concern. His sister and mother were finally driven to tears, and his father into a panic. The door is a major image cast in the story because throughout the entire novel. It serves as a symbol for the separation of two completely different worlds: the "ordinary" world, being symbolized by the house in which his family lives in, and "Gregor's world," his room where he is abandoned almost completely from the rest of the h
