Brave New World
"With Ford on the shelves and God in the safe." This is a very interesting quote and goes much deeper than the obvious. In the 1930's when this book was written, God was a major part of everybody's everyday life. Every thing that they did revolved around their God. Yet in Brave New World God was not an issue, in fact no one even knew what a god was. Instead there was Ford. The expressions that we use today like "Cleanliness is next to Godli
For with God came many foreign concepts to Brave New World that would destroy it; in fact almost every thing about God is the opposite of Brave New World. ness" or "For God's sake" are replaced with Ford, so it would be like "Cleanliness is next to Fordliness" and "For Ford's sake". God would be fatal to Brave New World and that is why he must be locked up in the safe. You are taught to like death, that death is a good thing. You would take a soma holiday away from the real world. Yet Ford was not worshiped, for worshiping is praying, and the only time you pray is when you need something or you have troubles. In Brave New World there was no need for God, there was no room for God. People often turn to God because they are afraid of being old and crippled and afraid of death. But in Brave New World you are young and beautiful until the day you die. In Brave New World you never need anything that you don't have and there are never any troubles. If you were ever depressed in anyway at all than you would just take soma and your troubles would go away.
