Investigating The Effect Of Sa
The aim of my experiment is to find the salt concentration in a potato tuber.I predict that osmosis will occur between the potato tubers and the solutions. I think that the potato tubers in distilled water will increase in length and mass while the potato tubers in the 100% salt solution will decrease in mass and length. Somewhere between these two solutions is the salt concentration of a potato tuber. There are several reasons that I have made my prediction above. I have knowledge about osmosis from previous experiments and I know that it is a special case of diffusion. Water molecules pass through a partially permeable membrane. In this experiment the partially permeable membrane will be the potato tuber cell membrane and I will be testing for the concentration of salt in the potato tubers. I know that when osmosis occurs water molecules travel from a high concentration to a lower concentration. In my experiment the concentration of the solution will be varied so when the concentration of the potato tubers are higher than that of the solution, the potato tubers will become smaller and lighter because the will have lost water. Osmosis is a special case of diffusion in which water m
The vacuole will expand and press outwards on the cytoplasm and cell wall. I then put each potato piece into a test tube very carefully so that no solution would be spilled. My results fit in extremely well with my prediction, from my results I was able to achieve my aim and prove that my hypothesis was correct. There is a diffusion gradient that favours the passage of water from the dilute to the concentrated solution. I cut the potato tuber to the nearest 0. I used the syringes to withdraw the required amount of liquid and put it into the test tube. To clean the test tubes I put some ethanol on a piece of cotton wool and wiped the markings off. I cut these slices so that they were 2 cm and then I measured them on a scale, they all weighed 0. I then used the cork borer to create long slices of potato with equal diameter and circumference. I will make each solution out of 100 % salt solution and distilled water only. Then I measured its mass on an electronic scale to 0. Looking at the results you will find whether the solution has a higher or lower water potential than the potato tubers, if the solution was over 4% salt then the potato tubers lost water molecules because they had a higher water potential than the solutions. 1C using a thermometer attached to a computer so that I couldn't make any human error.
