Both views accept the fact that in 1861 there existed a situation that, rightly or wrongly, had come to the point that could not have been solved by peacfull means. , he was shot by John Wilkes Booth, an actor from Maryland obsessed with avenging the Confederate defeat. Jefferson Davis was captured in Georgia on May 10. At the same time the North and the South were fighting against each other and general Grant kept attacking General Lee(Confederates). He was known to object slavery and so South Carolina who approved of the use of slaves, threatened to remove the state out of the United states of America. Around January !865, Transportation problems and successful blockades caused severe shortages of food and supplies in the South. The Republican party nominated President Abraham Lincoln as its presidential candidate, and Andrew Johnson for vice-president. 1863 the slave-holding border states started to have trouble with their slaves. President Buchanon(the president preceding Lincoln) refused to stop slavery in the states it already existed, he hoped that the crisis could be solved without causing a war. Nine other people were involved in the assassination; four were hanged, four imprisoned, and one acquitted. South Carolina pulled out and after it followed 10 more states, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These people wouldn't have just watched along side as the use of slaves continued and so the election of Abraham Lincoln was just a push closer to the civil war.
