Hester Pryne Character Analysis
Out of the four major characters in The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne was the most important one. Through out the story many different sides of Hester are shown, beginning with her guilty but brave personality at the start of the story and watch her grow into a caring, helpful person to the community. The Scarlet Letter begins when Hester had already committed her crime, so it is not known how Hester was before this all took place. Hester is first portrayed as a scandalous woman with no moral values. The reader is only aware that Hester has a husband who is not there with her at the time and that she has cheated on him with another man. So right away, Hester seems to have this rebellious characteristic, though the reader is not yet aware of why Hester committed her crime in the first place. She was so confident that Hester, Pearl, and Arthur would all one day be one big happy family. This isolation leads Hester into becoming very observant. She could go elsewhere and start all over again where people wouldn't judge her on past events. Imagine the patience needed to go through this everyday just to be with Arthur every once in a while. There were probably many situations where Hester wanted yell out and scream, but she knew if she got the congregation mad, Pearl would be taken away. Since she is rarely ever talked to, she begins to observe people. There is a time period there where people feel disgusted to be around her and feel that her sinful ways would rub off on them. She only finds comfort in Pearl and the occasional meetings Arthur. The isolation makes Hester a very lonely person. The people of Boston begin to care for her as well as time goes on. She observes the way they act around the towns people, and the way they act around her. She helps the people in need, she cares for the poor by giving up her time to give them food and water. Pearl is a big reason why Hester is obligated to change.
