Bob Dylan

             Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota. He taught himself how to play the piano and guitar and liked writing poems. He grew up listening to the music of Elvis, Little Richard, Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie. While he was in college he changed his name to Bob Dylan because he thought it sounded cool. He formed a couple of bands and played local clubs. In 1961 he dropped out of school and headed for New York City – he wanted to become a professional musician. He started out playing small clubs and coffee houses in Greenwich Village. He started making a name for himself and was signed by Columbia records in 1962. Bob Dylan was only 21 years old. Many of Dylan's songs were political protest songs. He wrote "Blowin In The Wind." He developed a reputation as a protest singer and writer. He didn't want to be labeled and as a goodbye to the protest movement wrote the song "It Ain't Me Baby."
             In 1965 he began a romantic relationship with another folk singer Joan Baez. He wanted to get more into electric rock and roll and wrote "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Like A Rolling Stone." He got booed off stage once because people liked his folk style better. He didn't care. In late 1965 he broke up with Joan Baez and met and married Sara Lowndes. On July 29, 1966 he was in a serious motorcycle accident that broke his neck. He finally returned to performing in December 1967 with another hit, "Lay Lady Lay." In 1971 he performed in the concert for Bangladesh with Beatle George Harrison. In 1972 he had his first acting role in the movie, "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid." He played Billy's sidekick. He also wrote the songs for the movie. "Knockin' on heaven's door" became a hit.
