Kate Chopin

In Kate Chopin's short stories' "The storm" and "The Story of an hour" we find the marriages are not pleased with each other. In other words what Chopin is telling us through these two stories is that marriage sometimes restricts our personal freedom. In both stories we can see different kind of problems in their marriage but they are still problems. In the first story, "The story of an hour" the conflict in the couple is that the husband Brently Mallard abused his wife Mrs. Mallard. Mrs. Mallard felt like she wasn't free and that's why when she received the news of her husband's death she was so happy because she felt free. In the other story, "The Storm" it's a different situation, is about unfaithfulness, Calixta who is unfaithful to her husband Bobinot as she had an affair with Alcee Laballiere whom was unfaithful to h

Maybe that you have to be very sure of your partner and marry that person if you really love that person. She was so repressed by her husband to the point that when she is told that Brently is dead she felt happiness. In different situations but it was obvious that the couples had problems. As we can see in both stories the couples had freedom problems. In "The storm" there is also the lack of personal freedom, but this case is different from the other because there is no repression from one member to the other. I think that she is trying to make a point here. And we also know that this affair is going to continue because Alcee writes a letter to his wife Clarisse telling her to stay longer if she wants to. Kate Chopin can also be saying through these stories that marriage is not easy and that needs to be treated fairly and that you need a balance to please both parts of the marriage. This is very sad because in a marriage you are supposed to be happy with that special someone and share the good times, but in y this case its all the opposite. In both stories the lack of personal freedom was present. In this case there is no personal freedom because the ones that had an affair don't tell the truth and confessed, instead they decide to keep the secret to themselves. And also there has to be communication in a good relationship. Kate Chopin in these two story bring us a situation that is very common now days. In this story we can see that the couples are not happy or pleased with themselves and that's why they had an affair.
