A Christmas Carol
During Dickens time gift giving for Christmas was not a wide spread practice as there was not much gift giving in the novel. If I were to give a gift to Scrooge, Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit they would have to be something they would need and use, but they would also have to be Throughout the novel there are scenes where Tiny Tim is limping around on his legs with a crutch. If I were to give him a Christmas gift during his time, it would have to be a wheelchair. A wheelchair would surely solve some of Tiny Tim's problems and allow him to be more mobile then what he was with his limp and crutch. Tiny Tim would most likely have a lot of pain removed if he was able to sit in a wheelchair rather then limping with a crutch. Throughout England, much money and energy were being devoted to medical care an
Bob Cratchit is Scrooge's secretary so he would need to do a lot of writing. As an underpaid clerk he had to find it hard to feed his family on his meager wages. For Christmas I would have to give Scrooge a dog; one that is totally devoted to his master. The first wheelchair was not as modern as the ones available today, however I am sure the early wheelchairs, sometimes called invalid chairs, would make a great gift. The gifts I picked for Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and Bob would surely do all of them good use, as they most likely wouldn't get those gifts during their time. During Dicken's time gift giving for Christmas was not a traditional custom. Dicken's Christmas celebration was to spend time with your family and to show your love for them. This gift would probably save him a lot of money he could use on his family, allowing him to spend more money especially on food. If Scrooge had a dog he would have to take care of him, feed him and love him. An ink well sat on a desk; a writer would dip the pen or quill into the well to put more ink on the pen. However it is good to see that the tradition of a one day party with family described in "A Christmas Carol" is still seen today. During Dickens time the only thing to write with was an ink well and a quill. By receiving this gift, my hope is that he could feed his family, making them much healthier and happier. Scrooge is a very mean and uncaring person, as shown throughout the novel.
