Beowulf Epic Hero

Long ago in a time and place where Anglo-Saxons roamed the land, due to illiteracy, stories were told to the uneducated. Many of these stories contained epic heroes which were very popular during this time. One particular epic hero appears in Beowulf, whose author is unknown. Beowulf, the title character, personifies the very essence if the traditional epic hero. In this story a kingdom, far away is being ravaged by a monster by the name of Grendel. This monster is the very manifestation of this evil and cannot be stopped. Only Beowulf, the strongest man in the Geats, can save them. Beowulf?s extraordinary epic hero strength surpasses the strength of an ordinary man. Beowulf believes all he needs is the strength from his bare hands to defeat the monster Grendel. When he arrives at Herot, he comes boasting, trying to give comfort to King Hrothgar?s kingdom, ?They have seen my strength for themselves/ have watched me rise from the darkness of war/ Dripping with my enemies? blood? (246) says Beowulf while greeting the kingom. The beast soon realizes that he was dealing with no ordinary man? That Shepard of evil, guardian of crime/ Knew at once that nowhere on earth/ He had met a man whose hands were harder?(325) says Grendel when referring to Beowulf. Like any epic hero Beowulf is proud and proud enough to boast about his strength. Beowulf was able to defeat Grendel by using his strength. My hands/ Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster? (267) speaks Beowulf while revealing his plans. Even Grendel could recognize that Beowulf has a supernatural strength. Though the odds were against him, Beowulf was able to heroically save a kingdom and once more prove that he was an epic hero. One of his epic hero qualities he displays is his strength. Later, Beowulf decides to wait for Grendel in Herot to attack, Beowulf waits for Grendel to approach him to attack. This epic?s vivid illustration of a controversy where good fought evil, will help Beowulf remain a popular legend for the Anglo-Saxon Period. ey are on an adventurous journey to save a kingdom.
