A Separate Peace- 3 wars
In the novel, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, there are three different wars. The first war is the war between because Gene is jealous of Finny, the second war is between Gene and Brinker, and the third war is World War 2.Gene is jealous of Finny because Finny always gets away with anything, like wearing a pink shirt. "It was hypnotism. I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn't help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal." (18). Then he starts to think that Finny is jealous of him too when Gene asks if he would mind if he ended up being valedictorian and Finny says, "I'd kill myself out of jealous envy." (44). Gene believes he is serious, so he thinks there is enmity between them, but really Finny is just joking and he has never been jealous of Gene. He believes that Finny deliberately set out to wreck his studies by having Super Suicide Society meetings every night. He is in shock because he realized this and he isn't really thinking, so he jounces the limb a little bit and makes Finny fall. Then one night, Brinker takes Gene and Finny with about ten other people to the Assembly Room. These three different wars were about Gene being jealous of Finny, Brinker suspecting that Gene really did make Finny fall, and World War 2. Gene gets mad and says, "Shut up! I swear to gosh you ride a joke longer that anybody I know. " (81) So everyone thinks that he really did kill Finny, but then he turns it back into a joke by making up all these things he did to Finny. When they go to the Butt Room Brinker makes a joke out of it, and says, "Doing away with his roommate so he could have a whole room to himself. as never been jealous of him; "He had never been jealous of me for a second. All the other boys take steps toward enlisting in some relatively safe branch of the military except for Gene because he knows that Finny needs him. The fat old men who don't want us crowding them out of their jobs have made it all up. After Finny dies Gene makes plans to enlist but avoid the danger of the infantry.
