A Separate Peace- 3 wars

             In the novel, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, there are three different wars. The first war is the war between because Gene is jealous of Finny, the second war is between Gene and Brinker, and the third war is World War 2.
             Gene is jealous of Finny because Finny always gets away with anything, like wearing a pink shirt. "It was hypnotism. I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn't help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal." (18). Then he starts to think that Finny is jealous of him too when Gene asks if he would mind if he ended up being valedictorian and Finny says, "I'd kill myself out of jealous envy." (44). Gene believes he is serious, so he thinks there is enmity between them, but really Finny is just joking and he has never been jealous of Gene. He believes that Finny deliberately set out to wreck his studies by having Super Suicide Society meetings every night. Also by saying that Gene is his best friend so that he would do everything with him and keep him from studying. This war ends before they do the double jump on the tree. Gene realizes that Finny has never been jealous of him; "He had never been jealous of me for a second. Now I knew that there never was and never could have been any rivalry between us. I was not of the same quality of he." (51). He is in shock because he realized this and he isn't really thinking, so he jounces the limb a little bit and makes Finny fall.
             The war between Gene and Brinker is because Brinker suspects that Gene really did make Finny fall on purpose. He thinks he fixed it so that Gene could have a room all to himself. When they go to the Butt Room Brinker makes a joke out of it, and says, "Doing away with his roommate so he could have a whole room to himself. Rankest treachery. Practically fratricide" (81).
