Roscommon Rose
When I was told I'd be representing Dublin at the International Millennium Queen of Roscommon Contest I was so proud and delighted. All sorts of things were running through my head. I was quite nervous about meeting the other girls and absolutely petrified about standing on stage in front of hundreds of people as I had never done anything like this before but I was really excited as well.On the Wednesday before the contest my mum and two sisters and I got prepared to hit the road to Roscommon. We had been invited to the Millennium banquet which was being held in the Abbey Hotel. We stayed in a lovely guesthouse and the lady there made me feel really important by telling me how delighted she was to have a 'Rose' staying in her house. When we arrived at the hotel at 8pm we were greeted there by the Dublin branch of the Roscommon Mens Association. The pressArrived and proceeded to take what seemed like hundreds of photos. After that I was approached by a young fashionably bald man who interviewed me for Boston television - what an experience. I tried to pretend this was an everyday occurance, otherwise I would have lost my nerve. The banquet was great and we sat at a table full of dignitaries, all lovely people includi
To be truthful from the first day I arrived in Roscommon I was treated like royalty. Morgan's house (the house where all the Roses were staying) and deposited my luggage as we were going on a cruise of the Shannon. The tour guide was a very funny man and kept us amused with lots of jokes and funny stories but he also had endless knowledge of the area which he imparted with great gusto. We were all delighted that Michael and Attracta Fitzmaurice were included in this presentation as Michael is a trojan worker and has dedicated a lot of his spare time to the Association. I have to admit it was a scary and exciting feeling, one that I'd never experienced before. We mingled with the crowd and danced the night away. Morgans to meet the rest of the girls. On our journey home that very night reality struck - I was to be standing in front of an audience, representing Dublin, in the Queen of Roscommon contest. As our different families arrived to collect us for the homeward journey we all said our goodbyes and exchanged addresses and telephone numbers. I spotted some of the other 'Roses' in the distance but knew I'd be introduced properly the following day. We were all giggling with embarrassment and the lads were all checking us out. Then it was time for the whole group to go out to a podium on the street. We could now relax and enjoy the disco for the rest of the night. We had lunch later that day and when we were finished, Michelle, the Sligo Rose, and myself went to get our hair done - then back to Mrs.
