DBQ: New England vs. Chesapeake Region There are many different reasons why we are here today. The best explanation is probably due to the two English groups that first came to the New World in search of better lives, who later on were known as the Chesapeake and the New England regions; those who started the development of a rural and unknown world into one of the world's most populated and economically rich nations; the United States of America. Those two English groups came for better lives, yet they had different reasons to settle; therefore developing two completely different societies. This is what developed the different characteristics between the New England and the Chesapeake region. One of the biggest differences between the New England and Chesapeake region is the reason why they established their colonies. The New England region consisted of separatist puritans that did not just want to "purify" the Anglican Church, but Protestants that wanted to separate from the Anglican Church to form the "perfect" church of God, instead of going through the trouble of reforming it. These new settlers were indentured servants who agreed to work off the price of their passage, which slowly led to the beginning of a slave-based society. Also, the aristocracy was high in the Chesapeake region except in North Carolina. The Chesapeake was established for economic wealth and was sent by the Virginia Company of London with the support of James I, who issued a charter for settlement. These gold-hungry gentlemen were unqualified and unprepared to live rugged colonial lives, and most importantly they were not ready to find their own food and work to survive. Since they had settled in the Massachusetts area, which was abundant with fresh water, and cold weather that killed the disease carrying bacteria.
