I Am Sam
I Am Sam is a wonderful movie that truly showsdespite any impairment you can truly accomplish anything you want. Sam is such a strong and loving father who will do anything to keep from loosing custody of his daughter. Although I thought this movie had some sad points it really gave me a lot of strength knowing no matter how many times you fell, if you just keep trying you will eventually accomplish your goal. In this paper I will discuss the life of Sam Dawson and how judgmental society can be when it comes to developmental disabilities. Sam's impairments were autistic tendencies, obsessive compulsive disorder, and having the Sam Dawson is a single father who lives in a small apartment with his daughter. He is surrounded by a wonderful group of friends who try to help him out anytime Sam needs them. He has autistic tendencies and has his own way of dealing with life. He is set in a routine and any change to this routine causes Sam a lot of stress. He has his normal routine of getting together with his friends and watching movies or playing cards, and the
She is a wonderful woman who tries to help Sam in every way possible, no matter what hour of the day or night. During this time his daughter is put into foster care with a very loving couple who wants to adopt her. This is a wonderful movie that I would recommend to anyone who is feeling hopeless about their own life and thinks they are useless. She also makes some changes in her life for the better and leaves her husband and develops a closer bond with her son. Child protective services and the court system make Sam out to be handicaped, they treat him as if he can not function on his own which is completely untrue. On his daughters seventh birthday Sam decides to throw her a big surprise party and invites all of her friends, the lady from CPS shows up right before she walks in and sees Sam grab a child by the arm. The police figured out that he really had no intentions on receiving services from this woman and let him go, but a lady from child protective services is in the station and thinks that Sam could use a good looking at as far as his parenting skills, and thus starts the downward spiral that because the battle of Sam's life. One day while Sam was at the mall drinking coffee, He was approached by a woman who he thought just wanted to talk, it turns out she was a prostitute and Sam was arrested. This movie defiantly makes you aware of the stigma and teaches you not to ever give up, because eventually someone will listen and when that day comes the entire heart ache will be worth it. She even sneaks out her bedroom window a few times just so she can see her daddy. She helps Sam get another job to make extra money and a bigger place so his daughter will have more room when she comes home. The court process is very hard on both Sam and his attorney as they try to find people that can say what a wonderful father he is and that even though he may have the mental capacity of a seven year old he is still perfectly capable of raising her on his own using his support system and community supports such as the YMCA. Sam keeps in constant contact with her and sees her as much as he possibly can. He finally fines one that is willing to do probono work And they start the task of preparing Sam for the stuff that is to come. CPS takes his daughter from him, and Sam begins the journey to find an attorney to help get her back.
