Being There

             The Plot of "Being There"
             Can a Grown up non educated man be able to run his own life after growing up in a wealthy family? In the story "Being There" by, Jerzy Kosinski, Chance, grew up in a mansion with wealthy adoption parents. The only knowledge he got was from the Television. He was isolated from the outside world and only allowed to stay inside or go out to the garden.
             Chance grew up in a wealthy family. He lived in a big house full of butlers, maids and housekeepers. 5 "He suddenly heard the creak of a window opening above his head and the voice of the fat maid calling." They were the only ones who kept care of him, even know they mostly neglected him. 7 "No one, not even the old man would tell him who his father was." He grew up not knowing who his parents were.
             His only education was what he saw threw his television. He learned how to do his gardening and chores through it. He loved to garden. 5 "Gardening was the white cane of a blind man." He loved it because it was the only thing he new how to do because he never got to go to school as little kid. 5 "Chance could not read or write." The only fun he had was out in the garden where he spent most of his time planting and taking care of the plants and flowers.
             Chance was isolated from the outside world. 4"He had never stepped outside the house and its garden." He was kept inside his house at all times. He never stepped foot outside besides in the garden. But the garden was in the back yard and there was a big fence all around it like a wall. 4"He was never curious about life on the other side of the wall."
             Even though Chance wasn't educated he still got his basic knowledge from his television in his room. He found a hobby as a gardener. Which he pursued while living in the mansion. He was isolated from the outside world but still survived in his gardening an
