GPS
With the proliferation of satellite-baseddefense systems and their continuing presence inthe media it makes us more aware of our nationaldefense. The United States is large, economicallystrong and a sometimes tumultuous presence in theglobal community. Although we may feel securebecause of our superior technology and defensecapabilities, our size and position in worldaffairs can make us a target for some countries. Wecan no longer be concerned with just our bordersand now what comes from the skies and the sea ismore of a threat than ever before. The UnitedStates government had to develop a way to counterthese possible attacks and the Global Positioning The Global Positioning System was initiated in1973 by the Department of Defense (DOD). It wasdeveloped by the the DOD because at a cost of overtwelve billion dollars the government had themonetary resources to achieve these idealisticgoals. Since that time it has grown from onesatellite used strictly by the military totwenty-six satellites that can be used by civilians
To maintain thebalance of power the United States government hadto develop a way to locate surfacing submarines ina matter of minutes anywhere in the world. Wartime defense is now moreaccurate and dependable than ever. UNDERSTANDINGGPS:PRINCPLES AND APPLICATIONS)GPS is made up of three segments: space, controland user. s satellite system is used to determinethe speed and position of an object anywhere in theworld within one hundred meters to mere millimetersdepending on the size and quality of userequipment. This segment makes sure orbits and clocks operatewithin acceptable limits. The benefits of GPS are not limited tojob related aspects alone. The ability to take out yourenemies missiles from great distances had a majoreffect on the balance of power. Thereceivers position is determined by using threesatellites, this is calledtriangulation. This increases cropproduction while reducing the use and expense offertilizers, pesticides and fuel which also helpsour environment. This will enable each aircraft to detectother planes in the vicinity and make sure theydon't cross paths in the air. This process is called "PrecisionFarming'. The user segment includesthe equipment used by the military and civilianswho receive GPS signals. In the everyday world, GPS has also made lifeeasier and safer. This is done by finding thedifference between the time a signal is sent andthe time it is received.
