The Album Graphics of Storm Thorgerson
The album art works of Storm Thorgerson and the music of Pink Floyd are part and parcel of the same production. To understand the art work it is necessary to discuss where the movement came from that firstly led to the music as this directly relates to the artwork as the visual metaphor.To understand this, it is important to discuss what happened in previous generations and how this affected the evolution of styles and culture. The key to this issue lies within the1950's; previous to this, youth culture did not exist. The school leaving age was fourteen and the vast majority of leavers went straight into employment. Further education was normally in the form of an apprentiship if at all, of course there were universities but this option was only open to the more affluent classes so that was the exception and the former being the rule. Post war affluence and a baby boom created a generation of youths (totalling around 70 million worldwide) that were staying in full time education longer and had more spending power. This coupled with growing commercialisation; firstly it created a youth culture that was not apparent before and secondly a diversity that segmented this new market. They evoke the surrealist's fascination with sleep and the activity of the mind when released from conscious control. This again is symbolic of interaction on different cultural platforms and the involvement of other media sources. The canvas on which Thorgerson had to work on was much larger, in fact the front was 12" x 12" and the inside stretched 24" x 12" this to me is a far more tangible canvas than a compact disc cover, vinyl albums are still more impressive to hold in ones hands the art work does not feel so coincidental as it does on it's modern counterpart. The repackaged version is not a reduced copy of the original but rather re-engineered. Subconsciously this event makes the viewer concentrate on these two elements when viewing the second room and each room in turn. This trend was to increase and lead to the hippy movement of the 1960's. This was in a way of goodbye as they no longer wanted to play their old material but concentrate on their new material, this never became the case and only served to increase the popularity of these songs while on stage. However on closer inspection you will find that the original is a graphic representation of light passing through a prism, which incidentally the band did ask for. I do feel that this method of production is unusual and bizarre but it did give each member a chance to do their own thing but also there was a common tie for the unification of the separate parts. The first clinical tests of the drug did not take place till the 1960's and are still continuing today. The participants in the psychedelic era are now most likely to between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. 3) It was normal for a vinyl album to come in a clear shrink-wrap to protect the cover during stock handling and in transit, however in this image you will notice that the shrink-wrap is black and opaque. Consumption of acid continued to grow through the 1950's and was mainly used by the more alternative groups. I will discuss both versions as they are both designed in the same context although they were designed twenty years apart. This was first accredited with being able to alter your personality and way of thinking, or that it brought you to a state of spiritual enlightenment.
