France occupied Vietnam by 1884. After World War II Vietnam declared independence, but it wasn't until after 1954, when the French was defeated by Ho Chi Minh and his communist forces that Vietnam was free from France. Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia. In comparison to the U.S. Vietnam is about the size of New Mexico. The countries that border Vietnam are Cambodia, China and Laos. Now that we have figured ou the geography of vietnam lets move on to the people of vietnam. One problem is that the private businesses no run by the government are not given financing. Most of the labor force is in the agriculture area, which produces rice, coffee, and tea. The terrain is low, flat delta in the south, to mountainous in the far north. , the Vietnam government only has one party, Communist Party of Vietnam. Vietnam's population was around 78,773,873 in an extimate done in July of 2000, 64% of the people run in age from 15 to 64. After Ho Chi Minh took away rule from the French the governemtn became communist with the capital being Hanoi. About 37% of the population is below the poverty line. Most Vietnamese study Buddhist religion, but Roman Catholic, Protestant, Cao Dai, Hoa Hao, and Muslim are practiced. The legal system is based on communist legal theory and the French civil law system.
