             Every stanza of the poem,The birds...? reveals the poet's perception of admiration; her use of stylistic devices such as diction and imagery convey her perception of the birds? song.
             The author begins the first stanza with diction relating to time. She clearly states 'the birds began at four o?clock, their period for dawn? which efficiently places the birds? song at morning. Period could refer to either time or musical arrangement, and by saying period she could be stressing the fact that the birds? time for song is limited. She ends the first stanza with 'music numerous as space?neighboring as noon?. She hears the birds? song, which apparently surrounds her-- taking up her space. However, the birds may be as far away as noon is from 4 in the morning. She exposes a spiritual omnipresence in the birds? song.
             Furthermore, the second stanza compares their song to water. Perhaps this comparison ties into the author's veneration for the tranquility these birds welcome the sun with. She begins this stanza describing the intensity of the sound and the numerous birds producing it. She uses diction with words such asforce?; a metaphor relating the number of birds to a multitude shecould not count?. Maybe the birds are a struggling, fighting force, much like an army. Every single bird contributes to the sound to strengthen the euphony; similar to howbrook by brook? the water can 'multiply the pond?. Notice how as the song becomes louder the diction for water imagery grows-- from 'music? tovoices? to line 20band? andbrook? topond? to line 17flood?. She says each brookbestows itself? in this force to create the ethereal music. That concept relates to the poem later when she explains the selfishness of the birds, and how they do not sing for man.
