Literature often shows how people are strengthened by the challenges they face."Literature...enables us to recognize human dreams and struggles...that we otherwise would never known existed" (Pr. John Lye). 'The Messenger', written by Marcus Zusak and 'Pumpkin Head Is Dead', written by Annette Kelleher not only gives us insight into human dreams and struggles, but both authors show us how people are strengthened. Marcus Zusak and Annette Kelleher both focus on how some people can only get stronger by the challenges they face, whether complicated or simple.Annette Kelleher's novel is set in Gympie, a small isolated town on the 7th January 1999 in Australia. The novel focuses on Fingula, the main character going through difficult times such as death of a friend, to only get stronger through all of her challenges. Through all of the stress of year 12 and the added stress of the problems with her step father and other family issues, Fingula comes out for better than worse and has gained an added strength. Marcus Zusak's novel is set in a suburban outpost by a major city. This novel focuses on Ed Kennedy who is 19 years old and an underage taxi driver. Ed has not achieved anything major in his life but that all changes when he

She moved her family to Australia in 1978 and lives on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Both 'Pumpkin Head Is Dead' and 'The Messenger' are constructed in first person narration. In 'Pumpkin Head Is Dead' the main issues are dealing with death and family problems. In both texts the characters are strengthened by the different challenges that they face. Marcus Zusak's main character lives in a suburban outpost of a major city and Marcus Zusak lives in Sydney so this may have had an influence on his setting. not a whole lot of prospects or possibility. Fingula finds it extremely hard to get over the friend's death because she has already experienced her father also going through lung cancer and losing his battle after a short period of time. Annette gets her message across by creating a character that gets killed foolishly and writes how Fingula gets over the death and what makes her feel better. Both Annette Kelleher and Marcus Zusak construct themes that put their main characters through a lot of physical and mental challenges. " Marcus Zusak has created a very positive ending and really emphasizes that any character can become stronger by putting in effort and meeting challenges not running away from them like Ed would have before he started to receive cards in the mail. In 'The Messenger' Ed has gone through so much and achieved things he never thought possible until he finds out that he is not the messenger but the message. Both 'Pumpkin Head Is Dead' and 'The Messenger' have very satisfying and unforeseen endings in the texts.
