CIVIL LIBERTIES AND WAR
At times in American History government has been seen as a danger to freedom from which individuals need protection or, conversely as a protector of citizen liberties. This portion of my paper will explore the position the government has adapted during different eras of American History. Exposing corruption, expanding democracy, making reforms, improving working conditions and the way of life is what characterized the progressive movement. Citizens demanded a change in numerous areas such as business, labor, economy, consumer affairs and an increase of democracy. The Progressive Era was marked with the arrival of President Theodore Roosevelt who fought for the good of the common man. During the Progressive era many large corporations had complete control of the services that they produced, Roosevelt broke up these monopolies. He was also a big supporter of labor he tried almost everything with in his powers to help the citizens of the United States. Roosevelt set up child protection laws, which were used to prevent children from working in factories. Child protection laws also reduced the amount of time children were allowed to work. Due to the exclusion of blacks from benefits of the new deal, the Urban League and NAACP supported congressman Lundeens bill to provide agricultural workers with benefits. The National Recovery Administration (NRA) was a product of the early new deal and also its corner stone. A staple of President Reagan was that he rested on a color- blind government. During the New Conservatism, the government was more a threat to the people rather than a protector of the people. As the population became culturally diverse, militias preaching whites are the real citizens began to emerge. QUESTION: 2Race has been the achilles heel for freedom in the United States in many through out time. Southern whites still believed that blacks were inferior. Also as a result of the war, blacks were allowed to work for self-improvement. With the rise in Asian and Hispanic population, talks of bilingual education, and restraining political asylum were discussed. The New Deal was designed to guarantee minimum living standards, and prevent future economic crises. Talks of limiting immigration also became a major discussion. In 1954 in a case to be known as Brown versus the Board of Education, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. It was created in 1933 under the terms of the National Industrial Recovery Act. These new policies were aimed to solve the economic problems created by the depression of the 1930's. Even though slavery was illegal by way of the 13th amendment, blacks were still slaves due to unfair trade practices by the white southerners.
