A Seperate Piece
In the book "A Separate Piece" the character Phinny grows a lot both mentally and physically. These changes only occur in the later part of the book because the author has yet to show use how Phinny acts. A few examples of physical changes are that he has to wear a large cast around his leg during most of the book because of what Gene did to him. A few examples of mental changes are when Phinny starters to not believe things he also stops to care so much about sports for him self but more for gene. You can see the start of the physical changes is when Phinny falls off of the tree because gene made him loose his balance. The changes were both obvious and not so obvious. The biggest change was that Phinny had to were a large cast around his leg. Another example that is not as obvious is that he gets tired much, much quicker. You kno
Phinny has always been a very strong character in my eyes both before and after the accident. You also see this when Phinny does not believe what gene is tiring to tell him about he made him fall off the tree. I think that this shows that Phinny has accepted that he will never be able to play sports again so he is attempting to live through gene. I think that if Phinny had just believed Gene when he first tried to tell him that he made him fall off on purpose then he might still be alive. w that because when he is walking he is always breathing heavily and he stops a lot and makes excuses like he wanted to look at something that he found on the ground so that Phinny will have a chance to catch his breath. One of the biggest changes is Phinny begins to not believe things like how Phinny does not believe that World War 2 is really going on. Phinny feels that he has to make excuses because he has always been the best athlete and Phinny does not want to admit that he needs to take a brake because he has never needed one before. Even though he could not play sports him self I think that he still was happiest when he was helping Gene train which shows how he both changed and staid the same at the same time. You can see the major mental changes in the last half of the book when Phinny comes back to the Devon Academy. I think this because he just believed him and accepted it then when leopard told every one what he say it would have not been as surprising and Phinny would not have gotten so upset. It seems to me that Phinny's dream was always to go to the Olympics but since he knows that he will not be able to do that he tries to get Gene into the Olympics so that in some way he would be able to attend the Olympics. I was very surprised that he was able to keep the same tip of view on life even though a few of his ideas changed his major out look on life staid the same. Another mental change that you see in Phinny is when he stops worrying about sports so much for him self and switches to trying to help Gene get into the Olympics.
