The Roaring Twenties

What Made the "Roaring Twenties" Roaring There were a lot of events and changes that made the twenties a new and exciting era to live in. Among these were the advancements in radio and motion pictures, the new directions that society was taking, and the women in the twenties that were changing as well. These are a few events or changes that made the twenties roaring. Radio helped the advertising business turn big by broadcasting advertisement for items that were in demand. This in turn, made the radio business huge as well. This brought forth two radio companies, NBC and CBS. These two companies sold advertising slots during broadcasts to finance their operations. Women were also trying to find more jobs outside of the home. Society changed directions in the twenties, some would say it was good and others would say it was bad. Radio and motion pictures created new types of entertainment for America. On the flip side, the automobile killed as many Americans in 1928 and 1929 as had lost their lives in battle during World War I. Gangs began to consolidate the illegal liquor trade. The flapper demanded the same freedom enjoyed by men. Women now having the right to vote began to look for financial independence. The women in the twenties began to express new freedoms to society. Eventually most of these jobs became almost strictly female. This combined motion picture and radio to give the movie sound. Many young women would become sales clerks, secretaries, or telephone operators. The Prohibition Bureau, which was responsible for enforcing the prohibition laws, was under-staffed and under-paid which made it possible for the gangsters to make illegitimate billions in the business. Women began more jobs and gained more freedoms financially in the twenties. Most women, however, were not flappers, but this type of woman demonstrated how the modern women's behavior was changing. The society began to take new directions with the automobile and organized crime.
