The Romanesque and Gothic Church

Here the foundation was laid and the path set for the birth of the Gothic church. “The exposed flying buttresses were immediately adaptable to churches with one aisle on each side. The Romanesque church was of modest height, as there were support problems in building higher and higher, this also will be solved during the Gothic period as they believed that building higher brought them closer to God. , evolved from within Romanesque church architecture when diagonal ribs were added to the groin-vault. The pilgrim would enter the church through the nave, which is the architectural term for the place where the congregation gathers for worship. Windows had to be very small due to the weight of the stone ceiling in order to keep the strength of the wall as strong as possible. To support the walls buttresses during this time were used of just large piles of stone stacked along the walls at intervals for support. The technical problems in vaulting wide spans of naves were numerous, and many builders admitted defeat by covering them with timber ceilings – this problem was urgent, for fire was a constant crisis, therefore many experiments were tried to overcome the difficulties being faced during this time. The use of the rib vault however, in Romanesque buildings occurred in Lombardy and probably dated the middle of the 11th century, was only a local experiment which was not followed up, and thus remained isolated and no more than an architectural curiosity until the Gothic church.
