Many American critics have asserted that the most well developed character in The Sun Also Rises is Robert Cohn. Although he is not the protagonist of the hero of this novel, he definitely is like the antihero. All throughout the story, Robert Cohn goes along with the characters to different places. In the beginning, it seems as if he is the main character, because, Chapters 1 and 2 revolve around him. However, as Jake's narration goes on, it is easy to determine that Cohn is not the most well-liked person in the story-in fact, by the end, everyone hates him and no one cares what happens to him when he leaves. Hemmingway effectively characterizes Cohn through the remarks of Jake, Lady Brett, Bill Gorton, and Mike Campbell, to help reveal his personality. "Robert Cohn was once middleweight boxing champion of Princeton"(11). The first sentence of this novel relates a sense of past and talks about Robert Cohn. Jake Barnes goes onto reveal more about Cohn saying he lived in Paris, was a Jewish son to a wealth family in New York, and was a shy man who "was married by the first girl who was ever nice to him"(12). As Hemmingway indicates, Robert bathes and takes special care for his appearance when he knows Brett likes being in his presence. "(150), but at the same time, he feels bad for the harsh words Mike gave him. This diction relays a sense of satirism and criticism. Jakes, the narrator, doesn't think very highly of Robert. But, to Robert, he didn't feel it was such a one time ting- he wanted to be something more. As Brett said, "He did behave very badly,"(147) her feelings for him were nothing personal, but purely physical. He had been close friends with Robert, and had been through a similar situation with Brett, so he had both compassion and understanding for Robertıs position . He truly genuinely wants her and isn't about to let her be with Mike. He even fights with Jake, the only person he considered to be his friend. " He hates Robert for "hanging" around Brett [to look] at her" (147) and he thinks Robert was just a jerk. Brett, for example, had a small fling with Robert in San Sabastian. His personality is drastically shaped by his experiences growing up and his relationships with people. As the story reveals, Brett, Bill, and Mike begin to dislike him as well.
