South Africa Aids problem

In this project I will discuss the problems with aids, particulary in South Africa, and how itīs possible that this disease has become such a big problem for this country.I will give you some information about Aids, and also suggestions for what we can do to avoid it in the future.My sources have been the internet, the library and I also have a couple of friends in South Africa that have mailed me information.It has become the most important health issue for a lot of countries around the world, especially in Africa. I will know give you a very simple explanation of this extremely complex disease. Itīs a virus that enters the bloodstream and attacks our immune system, making it harder to defeat other infections. There exists two different types of Hiv. Hiv-1 is the most common one, and itīs mostly located in the First World, Asia, Latin-America and most of Africa, while Hiv-2 is geographically linked with West Africa.Hiv-1 is a more lethal disease than its counterpart, and it has a shorter incubation period.When you get infected by HIV, youīre labelled "HIV positive" and you carry the virus for the rest of your life.Stage 1: Primary HIV infection. An estimated 1,700 South Africans are becoming infected with HIV each day. So why didnīt awareness translate into changed behavior? Why is condom use much lower than in many other African countries? Why didnīt the plan succeed?What went wrong:One of the things that went wrong was probably that there was no real leadership. People didnīt understand that to go through with the plan took a lot of courage. In this hospital babies were born at a rate of 30000 per year, but since women make more use of decentralized clinics, this figure has dropped to 10000. - The results of campaigns and prevention programmes has been largely disappointing but an understanding of the key components of effective programmes has grown dramatically. Although, technically it is not strictly a disease, it is often referred to as one. As far as prevention goes, various campaigns have been launched. Already, one in ten South Africans is HIV-positive, and as more HIV infections convert to AIDS cases, the epidemic is becoming more visible. Infections like tuberculosis, meningtis, pneumonia and other bacterial infections are very dangerous at this stage. World Cup 2006:It was said that if SA would have captured the WC 2006, the Government would have been pressured into doing something about the crisis. In one particulary hospital, 75 percent of all the guests were HIV-related. Some 10-12 percent of all South Africans are HIV positive. Aids statistics in South Africa:Across South Africa, hospitals have gone from near full to overflowing, thanks to the AIDS virus. This period can be last up to three weeks.
