Orthopedic Surgeons have many duties and responsibilities. It also requires more schooling than most other professions. Orthopedics began in the 18th century with pioneering efforts of Jean Andre Venel. Originally, Orthopedic Surgery was used to treat crippled children with skeletal deformities. The word Orthopedic comes from two Greek parts. "Ortho" means straight and "pedic" has to do with children. Hence the original purpose of the specialty. It wasn't long before diseases like; Ostemyelitis, Poliomyelities, and Tuberculosis crippled children, and required specialized treatment. They are also on-call mostly all day. It depends on what part of the body and how precise the operation is. Students spend most of the first two years in lab and classrooms taking courses like anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, psychology, microbiology, pathology, and medical ethics and law. As much as 50% of the Orthopedist's practice is devoted to non-surgical or medical management of injuries or diseases while, the 50% is devoted to surgical procedures. Modern Orthopedics has extended beyond the treatment of fractures, broken bones, strained muscles, torn ligaments and tendons and other traumatic injuries with a wide range of congenital skeletal deformities and with the effects of degenerative diseases such as arthritis. The average salary for medical residents ranged from $32,789 to $40,849 for the first year of residency. This means that doctors as well as patients must where special suits and booties over their shoes. Usually there are about for four to five doctors at a surgery. It takes many years of education and training to become a Surgeon but earnings are among the highest of any occupation. Also in the OR (Operation Room) everything is sterile. These fourteen years are broken down into four years of college, four years of medical school, five years of an Orthopedic Surgery residency program, and a year optional specialized education. New Orthopedic Surgeons, with working in a private practice make an average starting salary of $175,000 while, a surgeon who has been working for more than five years can make about $220,000 per year.
