Freedom vs. Security

On September 11th, 2001, an attack was made on The United States of America. Nineteen terrorists boarded and hijacked four passenger airlines, and used them as weapons against buildings in New York and Washington D.C. The fourth plane was brought down in rural Pennsylvania. Over 3,000 lives were lost in these attacks, and many more were ruined by the loss of family, friends, and coworkers. To prevent a reoccurrence of the events of 9-11-01, security policies have been changed, new measures taken, and national awareness heightened. However, new security measures have a tendency to take away some of our civil liberties as citizens of a democracy. This atrocity brought about a new debate within our nation and its leaders. Some say individual freedoms can be sacrificed for the sake of safety. Others strongly disagree and claim that is a disgrace to our constitution, history and country to take such measures. These new laws would loosen the current restrictions, and allow both local and federal agencies to monitor people while they bank, shop, and communicate on the web, and on the phone. This is something that we Americans should adjust to, for our own safety. The wire-tapping done by law enforcement agencies is very selective and discretionary, and only targets terrorist activities. Another security measure taken by our government has to do with legislation that is being passed by our Congress. The government is doing this so that they can locate and track possible terrorists and their financial activities. Soldiers pacing around an airport garbed in full battle gear, armed with automatic rifles is a new sight for most American citizens. On the other hand, you have nothing to worry about unless you are a terrorist, or someone who harbors or pays one. However, if one were to travel to almost any other country in the world, (especially in Europe) this sight would be a common, everyday reality. This new technology does not interfere with the lives of normal citizens in any way, only those who cause problems within our society. Information such as fingerprints, driving records, and criminal backgrounds can found by a single swipe, much like what is done with a credit card. Throughout our history as a democratic nation, we have learned that freedom always comes at a price, and is never really free. The United States is considering is expanding the capabilities of the driver's license. Privacy experts say that this, much like the wire-tapping, would cause agents to track the movement and activity of citizens throughout the whole country. The current laws on wire-tapping are very tight and strict, because it deals with the basic constitutional principle of the right to privacy.
