Compare and Contrast The Treat

The two poems 'Charge of the Light Brigade' by Lord Alfred Tennyson and 'Dulce et Decorum Est' by Wilfred Owen, both deal with the subject of war. The writers of these poems themselves had very different experiences with war. Alfred Tennyson had heard of the charge made by the light brigade and had written his poem with no first hand experience of the event. However, Wilfred Owen had actually fought in the Second World War, and written from his own experience. Although each of the poems deals with the subject of war, they both create a very different feeling and idea about war. The writers of these poems In the two poems, imagery of the soldiers is used to describe the feelings of war in the poem. Their actions and appearances are described in different ways. 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' uses words such as 'glory' and 'honour' to create a very heroic image of the soldiers. Tennyson uses phrases, which further the brave image of the soldiers:The words and phrases used in Tennyson's poem are very bold and simple which give the impression of brave and spirited soldiers. However, in Wilfred Owen's poem, phrases and words such as 'old beggars', 'corrupte

Owen refers to this quotation as 'an old lie'. I preferred this poem because it creates images and a feeling of doom about war. "Phrases such as these create the chaotic and destructive atmosphere on the battle site. The language used is very descriptive and dramatic:"Gas! Gas! Quick boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling,Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,But someone was still yelling out and stumbling. Both the poems have different morals and attitudes towards war. So in comparison, it can be concluded that the two poems deal with the treatment of war in almost opposite ways. 'Dulce et Decorum Est' has a more negative and pessimistic view on the subject of war and 'Charge of the Light Brigade' has an optimistic and positive attitude towards war. The repetition of these words is used to create an impact, which leaves the reader in awe. The descriptions, language and rhythm in Tennyson's poem help us to see that the message of his poem is that the soldiers who were involved in the charge of the light brigade were very brave and honourable. Dulce et Decorum EstPro patria mori. It gives the view of somebody that was actually involved in the war and gives their opinion. The language, imagery, and rhythm help to create the gist of the poem for the reader.
