A Rose for Emily
"A Rose For Emily" by William Faulkner is told in the third person point of view. Thispoint of view does not allow us to get into the heads of the characters in the story whichmakes these characters sort of limited. The narrator is never revealed so we are to assume The essay takes place in a town called Jefferson. It begins by telling us that themain character "Miss Emily Grierson" has died, and everyone in the town attends herfuneral. The men attended "through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of the curiosity to see the inside of her house." Miss Emily'sfamily were the upper class of the town and were respected because her father had loanedthe town money. The essay then goes back to tell Miss Emily's life story, in which shedoes many things that most people would consider to be crazy. I found Emily to be a very headstrong and troubled lady. Miss Emily's absurdreasoning for things was directly affected by the society in which she grew up. I think you
She poisoned her only lover to secure his company. It is ironic that Emily keeps Homer there as if he was a rose and lets him witherand dry out like one would keep a rose. I was very shockedby this! I was especially astonished when they noticed a the indentation of a head and along gray hair. There was no legal document to prove this was fact so they believe Emilywas obligated to pay her taxes. Theroom was decorated for the honeymoon in a rose color and a rose is the universal symbolof love. The disgusting smell whichlurked about her house was the decomposition of the body. When Emily came to the conclusionthat Homer was going to abandon her she took a visit to the druggist. She disregarded the letters the town office hadsent her. Emily poisoned Homer because she didn't want to be to belonely when she though he was going to abandon her. I mean it is definitely an action out of theordinary! Emily was a very sick individual. For years she had keptHomer in the rose shaded room and lay next to him in bed. When the alderman pays her a visit she simply tells him she has no taxes inJefferson. It had been talked about throughout the town that Colonel Sartoris hadpromised Emily she would pay no taxes because of her fathers contribution to thecommunity.
