Coaching the Sport of Wrestling

             Ask yourself, can I handle the intensity, the violence, the hard work, or the difficulty of becoming a good wrestler. Wrestling is the ultimate combat sport. I have had 5 seasons of wrestling experience. 2 seasons of freestyle and 3 of collegian style wrestling compiles my experience. The idea of coaching wrestling sparked from many things. One reason was the fact that my younger brother began wrestling his 6th grade year. Another reason was because Gordon Ainsleigh was a very unsatisfactory coach. These reasons drove me to teach my brother at home. This greatly increased his skills and confidence as a wrestler and as a result encouraged me to want to coach the team.
             Wrestling is a sport that requires an extreme amount of conditioning and strength. The objective is to step into the ring and beat someone up and pin them to the ground. Your mind must remain focused despite any distractions in a match. You must think of your various techniques and attack or react. Having a desire to win does not come just out of thin air. You must visualize it and execute. Wrestling is the ultimate combat sport which puts to the test one's mind, body, and emotions.
             A wrestler has got to be in excellent physical condition, that's the bottom line. To lack in this area can mean extreme soreness and/or serious injury. If the wrestler values and enjoys hard work and exercise, he will be successful. When the referee raises your hand after a match, you will reflect on the work and the blood and the sweat. Pride swells and you know you paid the price to win.
             The first week or so of practice should be dedicated to getting into wrestling shape. Running is a valuable aspect of the sport. A wrestling match requires an extreme amount of endurance and physical stamina. In coaching wrestling, the coach must put his wrestlers through a series of rigorous combinations of push-ups, sit-ups, leg lifts, pull-ups, and long distance runs. Outside of practice, the wo...
