             Many people think the older you get the harder it is to remember, however this is not accurate. Like any other muscle in the body, the brain needs to be used and requires exercise in order to be healthy and active. When it comes to studying and learning there are many mnemonic devices that can be used to help enhance memory. One of the easiest and most effective devices used are called ACRONYMS. Acronyms are formed by using the first letter from a group of words. This will form a set of letters that will create a new word. This is particularly useful when remembering words in a specific order. Acronyms are very common in ordinary language and in many fields. Some examples of common acronyms are: NHL (National Hockey League), CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), NBC (National Broadcasting Corporation), and FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). This theory can be applied to many aspects of life when trying to remember.
             Let us suppose that you have to memorize the names of the four lobes in the brain for your Psychology class: 1) Frontal Lobes, 2) Parietal Lobes, 3) Occipital Lobes, and 4) Temporal Lobes. Take the first letter of each item you are trying to remember: FPOT. Then arrange the letters so that the acronym resembles a word you are familiar with. In this example, FPOT is easy enough to remember. Once you have memorized what "FPOT" stands for, you can take this process one step further by creating an acronym for the meaning of each lobe. The 'Frontal Lobes are involved in speaking and muscle movement and in making plans & judgement" within this definition you might use SMPJ. This will help you to remember the specific aspect of the term.
