Imagism
In (Modernism), post Victorian 'formalism' gave way to free verse. Poetry was no longer about sharply crystallized images, nature, or that of moral values; poems came to be about the common people and events. Various theories of sciences like Einstein 's Theory of 'Relativity', psychological findings , Darwin's theory on the evolution of man as opposed to the age old belief that GOD created the earth and man, led to the challenging and questioning of the church and other authorities. This further provoked a feeling of uncertainty and thus since it did not have a stable centre under Modernism sprang up a whole load of 'isms' so to say. Some of these faded out as quickly as they came about - others stayed. Thus we have a vast variety of poetry emerging in 20th century America, each different from the other in content, form and style.IMAGISM: Ezra Pound along with Amy Lowell and William Carlos Williams formed the moving force behind Imagism. 'Vers Libre' - a principle that attracted a lot of attention - was used largely during this time. The year 1913, when Freud's interpretation of dreams shocked America, was the year when the magazine "Poetry" published the Imagist manifesto.
Experimentation was carried out in form and content; in the process of 'making it new' and different. No more was the preoccupation with Nature and Man used or written about. Characters thus seemed very interesting -not so much for what they did but for their motivation and thoughts. It reveals the character's thoughts, feelings, emotions and motives, often without any logical sequence, without commentary of the author. It was thus a 'creative tidal wave', John Dos Passos. ee Cummings also used a lot of typography in his poems like in his 'Buffalo Bill', 'in just' etc. One day but through character's thoughts - years and years carried from one point of time to another. To allow absolute freedom in the choice of subject4. So is the case with Fitzgerald's Gatsby. Later three anthologies under the title 'Some Imagist Poets" was compiled by Amy Lowell. Common characters with ordinary lives were now given importance to art, women, working men, blacks, immigrants, etc. Content - Modernists wrote of the 'Real' rather than the abstract.
