Explorations Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein we are presented with characters of many types. Some of the characters we face in the story seem to be exploring or searching for something. There seems to be two main explorers that readers focus on, however they seem to overlook the most obvious explorer of all the characters, Frankenstein's monster. Sure there are other explores such as Captain Robert Walton who was on a quest to reach the North Pole. Doctor Frankenstein was another explorer who was out to create life where there wasn't any. Why do people overlook the monster as an explorer? It is a mystery why the character who does the most exploring is often overlooked. The monster not only has the task of exploring who and more importantly what he is, but is also burdened with the task of exploring mankind. All three "men" are searching for something, but none of the three accomplish their task.First we start with Robert Walton who is the captain of a vessel trying to find the North Pole. Unfortunately Walton cannot complete this task for his boat has become trapped in the ice sheet that surrounds the arctic. While trapped in the ice the crew spots a man on his dogsled, a man who seems he is about to perish on th
Although at first Frankenstein agreed to create a companion for the monster, he changed his mind for fear that between the two of them they would spawn a master race. As the monster's story continued, he demanded that Frankenstein create a female companion so that he would not be alone in the world, and promised to live away from society. While Frankenstein is recovering from his extreme exposure to the harsh weather, Walton begins to talk to him. He found the secret of activating dead flesh. Everything important in Frankenstein's life ended up being destroyed, including his wife and best friend, and some close family friends. Frankenstein was very interested in natural philosophy and chemistry and basically tried to play God by creating life. The two men start to have a friendship; Walton is a very lonely man and has long desired a friend. Frankenstein tried to set the monster's mind by promising him a companion so he could live a normal life. Felix formed the same opinion as everyone else, that the monster looked evil so therefore he must be. Victor claims fault when he says, "Alas! I had turned loose into the world a depraved wretch whose delight was in carnage and misery; had he not murdered my brother?" (Shelly, 60) When William had revealed his name to the monster, the monster immediately figured that by killing the young boy, he would have revenge on Frankenstein. Frankenstein is showing the effects of his journey and for a while will not talk about what he is doing alone, traveling the Arctic. The monster's expression of anger ended up being a violent one, this was uncharacteristic of the monster. His high hopes of man would only set him up for failure in the future.
