Grunge is Dead
Kurt Cobain was born a happy child, but his life soon took a turn to a bit darker side. At an early age Kurt was abandoned by his parents and took solace in music. As his love for music grew, he developed his own style of music thus began the band Nirvana, and with it the birth of grunge. With the bands popularity growing came greater troubles. He will forever be remembered. Kurt Cobain gave rise to the grunge era and enlightened the world, with his death came the death of grunge. Kurt Donald Cobain was born on the 20th of February 1967 in Aberdeen, which is located about 120 kilometers southwest of Seattle, Washington (Ronson 1). Cobain was for most of his childhood a sickly bronchitic child. He grew up in a middle class society and was hyperactive as a child. As a result he was prescribed a morphine-based drug to help him concentrate in school. The drug often kept him awake until 4 a.m. so he was given sedatives in order to get to sleep (Arcouft 1). Kurt had a happy childhood until he was seven years old when his parents divorced. It was an ordinary divorce, but Kurt was very traumatized by it. He became shy and difficult. He felt most of their "fans" were false fans and only liked their hit single. He later said he felt more like a girl than a boy. On several occasions Kurt was near death because of an overdose. "Smells Like Teen Spirit", off the Nevermind album, became Nirvana's #1 hit. Cobain said that his parent's traumatic split fueled a lot of the anguish in Nirvana's music. On March 4, 1994, Kurt Cobain took fifty sleeping pills with a bottle of champagne and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. " Kurt had earlier said that same year that he never expected to reach the age of 30. In the beginning of 1993 they recorded what was to be their last studio-recorded album, In Utero. The lyrics to the songs revealed the personal side of Kurt Cobain, displaying his struggles and hardships through life. This album was supposed to get rid of all the false fans they got under the Nevermind success. He agreed to go to treatment but it did not last long.
