John Williams

To think of timeless music, music that has survived for twenty, thirty, even hundreds of years; one cannot help but think of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. But that leaves a question in the mind, "What has happened to classical music and where is it going." Earlier this century where Stravinsky, Sousa, Gershwin all the way to Bernstein who died in 1990. Tragically today, one might think of Yanni or John Tesh as composers; however, many critics agree that new age music will not stand the test of time. Only a certain type of composer nowadays can reach the fame and recognition that composers of the past have enjoyed, and that is scorers. The top echelon of these composers includes the likes of Hans Zimmer, Steven Schwartz, Jerry Goldsmith, and even Elton John. The most popular and successful composers this century have given the public unforgettable melodies to unforgettable movies and TV shows. As was said in the third episode of Dawson's Creek, "Dawson, romance doesn't always come with a John William's score." Without a doubt, the most successful of these scorer slash composers is John Towner Williams. John Williams was born in 1932 in New York to Johnny and Ester Williams. His father was a

Only a year later at UCLA, he composed a piano sonata that was pretty successful for a nineteen year old. He has received three Golden Globes for Jaws, Star Wars, and E. Later, he hooked up with Alfred Newman at Twentieth Century Fox and began an unstoppable wave of compositions, scores, and awards. He has also been awarded seventeen Grammy's for Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, E. To have billions of people recognize a melody is extremely successful; success rivaling that of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Also, some of the most recognizable TV themes from the eighties can be attributed to John including: Evening at Pops, NBC news, Masterpiece Theatre, and the Olympic scores from 1984 to 1996. Even more amazing is he more than 75 soundtracks he has pumped out for some of the most successful movies of this century. and fourteen Golden Globe nominations. Just the mere title of a movie that he has collaborated on invokes a melody in someone who might not even appreciate music. John has remained faithful to Steven Spielberg, composing all but one of his movies. He has also led the Boston Pops for many years and has guest conducted orchestras around the world including the London Symphony Orchestra. John still tours and is rumored to be writing an opera for next year. Its most popular medium today is movies and television. Of these include: Earthquake, Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Dracula, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.
