Macbeth: The Increase of Evil Power
As one of the greatest writers, though now deceased, Shakespeare's talent stays a favorite. His best tragic piece, Macbeth, captures the absence of fidelity. Macbeth, a turbid man, experiences two hallucinations as a result of his wicked ambition. The dagger in Act I, scene i, leads Macbeth to fortitude, as Banquo's ghost in Act iii, scene iv, makes his perception quiver. While planning to kill Duncan, King of Scotland, Macbeth became very nervous. Before his sinful act, a dagger appeared floating in the air while he was waiting for the sound of the death bell. "To feeling as to sight, or art though but/ A dagger of the mind, a false creation." (II, i, 38-39) Soon after the dagger's appearance the bell rings, and Macbeth brutally kills Duncan. Macbeth's second hallucination appears in Act III, scene iv, at a banquet after he kills his best friend. Macbeth became King of Scotland after Duncan's death because he was highest of Thanes. Before Macbeth proceeded to kill Duncan he tried to turn back "We will proceed no further," (I, vii, 31) but Lady Macbeth pushed him on questioning his manhood. Banquo was with Macbeth when his prophecies were given, and might have an idea that Macbeth is the true murderer of Duncan. Both hallucinations are caused by the prophecies, giving Macbeth the greedy heart to kill. Macbeth became a new man with little conscience. Macbeth allows his own courage and selfishness to rapidly spin out of control. " (III, ii, 37) She had no idea what was going on. This time it wasn't Lady Macbeth pushing Macbeth to do something evil, it was his own evilness deep down, coming out. "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! / All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! / All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!" (I, iii, 48-50) After two prophecies come true, Macbeth decides to turn on his King and kill him in hope to claim the throne. For the first time since claiming the throne, Macbeth feels a little bit of his conscience. Macbeth's imagination gets the best of him when he sees the ghost of Banquo sitting in his seat at the banquet. " (II, ii, 31-32) Even being King didn't satisfy Macbeth's hunger for more, he would go to great lengths to ensure his power would last.
