Corporal Punishment
TOPIC: CORPORAL PUNISHMENT FOR CHILDRENShould Parents Be Allowed To Use Corporal Punishment To Correct Their ChildrenCorporal punishment for children (including smacking, spanking and hitting) in the home and school is banned in nine European countries. Bans are currently being debated by the government of New Zealand. Some people argue that if we ban corporal punishment, we will promote a less violent culture. Others believe that corporal punishment for children is a useful form of discipline, it does not harm the child if it is done carefully and with love. This essay will discuss the healthy effects of corporal punishment, show the problems caused by prohibition, and consider whether a change in section 59 of the Crime Act is the best solution to the problems.Corporal means relating or belonging to the body, punishment is "the severity of the punishment must be in keeping with the kind of obligation which has been violated." Thus, corporal punishment is using force (such as smacking, spanking, hitting and so on) directed at a body (Chambers's Twentieth Century Dictionary). It is kind of child abuse.
So there are not so many social problems caused by drunk. If more and more parents join the campaign, sooner or later, fewer parents will use physical punishment. Both China and America still keep capital punishment, and hold the highest record of number of people who were killed by capital punishment. The government would rather choose capital punishment. Thirdly, they fear that their children will be spoiled or uncontrollable if they are not punished for bad behaviour. Thirdly, most students do not like drink. Secondly, spanking some degree is a sexual violation, the nerve there connect to the body's sexual nerve centres. More and more people have joined the campaign for the prohibition of corporal punishment, one supporter, Roger McClay, the Children's Commissioner expressed his opinion on New Zealand Herald (2000), when he said: " if adults can't be hit for being naughty, why should they be able to do it to children?" As a result, some parents have stopped smacking. 4 percent of people disagreed with the corporal punishment for boys, whereas 36 percent agreed. It is very different opinion on cannabis from china to New Zealand. On the contrary, people who disagreed with corporal punishment increased sharply, and the percentage was about three folds than it was in 1993. JOURNAL 4There is no age limit for drinking alcohol in China; every one can go to shops and retailers to buy it. However, it does not means drunken problems do not exist. Thus there is confusion within the legal system as to whether the parents who are charged for corporal punishment should be treated as committing a crime or not.
