Grizzly Bears

             Grizzly Bears or Ursus arctos horribilis, are both threatened and endangered depending on which part of the United States is being considered. Grizzlies tend to have yellowish-brown to dark brown hair often having white tip which give them the grizzly appearance (Grizzly Bear, USFW). They have a hump above their shoulders, and on average their height is 4' 3". Their length can range from 5' 11" to 7'. A Grizzly bear's weight can range from324 to 1499lbs. and in a few cases up to 1700lbs. in large males. These large bears have poor eyesight but can smell things up to two miles away (Ursos arctos).
             The Grizzly bear requires a large habitat. Home ranges can be as large as 2,600 sq km, but average between 73-414 sq km. Males require up to seven times the area of a female. The bears establish dominance through size, strength, and threats. They space themselves out giving the most aggressive bears the largest space, or most desirable area (Grizzly Bear, USFW). These ranges overlap extensively with little to no territorial defense. The bears prefer open forested areas without roads or less than one road per sq mile. The forested area provides shelter for daytime resting. The grizzlies are primarily nocturnal and require dense cover for shelter during the day. At night or in the evening the grizzlies will search for food.
             Grizzlies are omnivores, eating almost everything eatable. They dig for roots, mice, insects, and fungi. They also consume leaves berries, fish, elk, moose, deer, sheep, mountain goats, and livestock. When hunting large animals they will return to the carcass until there is no meat left. One of the only times Grizzlies will congregate is around a major food source (Ursos arctos). An example of this is the salmon migration up stream.
