Reincarnation
One is floating down the river, the other is wandering aimlessly along the streets of New York. One has conflicts with the racism of the south, the other has trouble keeping the innocence of this world. One has a slave to keep him company, the other has his little sister. No matter how you look at it, Holden Caulfield and Huckleberry Finn have lead very similar lives and have dealt with similar issues. They each have conflicts within themselves while battling society on the outside. But most importantly, both of them have dealt with loneliness, wandering in this world, and the complexities of a deformed conscience. In Huck Finn, Huck has a very hard time dealing with loneliness, sometimes to the point of suicide. He's never really had a family of his own. All Huck has ever had was an abusive alcoholic of a father or a widow foster mom who kept on trying to "sivilize" him. Also, when he is on the river, after escaping from Pap and his broken home, he feels incredibly alone. Just as Huck feels alone in this world, so does Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye. After leaving Pencey, Holden wanders through New York alone looking for some comfort, any comfort. He wants to know that there is still the slightest bit of innocence
As Huck leaves Jackson Island, he is left to wander down the Mississippi with nothing but the clothes on his back and a runaway slave. "We would sell the raft and get on a steamboat and go way up the Ohio amongst the free states, and then be out of trouble" (80). In one incident, he is sitting with an older woman on a train, and he tries to look impress her by ordering alcoholic drinks. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden has a very deformed way of thinking. "I wasn't sleepy or anything, but I was feeling sort of lousy. However, in the end, Huck still remains to be a nomad. Throughout most of the book, Holden is by himself walking the streets of New York. He wants to preserve the innocence of the world, even though it is impossible. Just as Huck is seen as a wanderer, so is Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye. Neither of them have any real idea where they are going, just hoping they get to free land. So even though Huck wanders down a river and Holden wanders through the streets, they are both trying to fulfill the void in their hearts. When Jim and Huck were on Jackson Island, Huck decided to play a very mean trick on Jim, which ended up backfiring. Are they successful? Well, one would have to read the books and truly decide for themselves if they are or not.
