Underage Drinking

Underage drinking has been a major issue in the last few years in the United States. Twenty-One is now the legal drinking age in our country. The term legal age is a situation that has been questioned by a lot of people throughout the years, especially teenagers that are at least eighteen but below twenty-one years of age. How fair is it that they set a legal age limit on alcohol? Some people do not understand why they developed this law and stand by it so strictly. In 1987 the Minimum Legal Drinking Age Law was passed to "make it illegal for any person who is less than 21 years old to either purchase, possess, or consume alcoholic beverages or to misinterpret their age to obtain such beverages" (Lowering the Drinking Age, 2001, Gotta, Renee 1). Also in 1987, there was a law that was brought to attention by the Adult Responsibility Law that was trying to prevent underage drinking (Lowering the Drinking Age, 2001, Gotta, Renee 1). What this law did was threaten adults who were of age with criminal punishment if they purchased alcohol for minors. What people don't think about is that if they would purchase alcohol for a minor, and something happen to them while they were drinking, the person who purchased it is liable for

1999), Poland no minimum age/18 to purchase, Portugal no minimum age, Spain 16 (18 in some regions)" (collegelife. Why punish the person who is underage, but mature enough to drink and still accomplish his or her goals, and not punish somebody who is of age and is not mature enough to drink. "There has also been a huge increase in younger people that drink more abusively when they do drink. Which I find ridiculous, the Chinese heritage is known for their education and brilliancy, they don't have a legal drinking age. S Census Bureau did a study on males between the ages seventeen to forty-four, to see if they were ever involved in a physical fight after drinking. 1 million people who have been victims of assault in the United States, 25% have believed that their predator had been drinking. One reason that the country feels that the drinking age should be higher, is so college bound students focus more on education rather then drinking. If you're mature enough to get married, or enroll in the military to defend your country, how is it that you're not mature enough to drink? The United States is one of the only countries in the world which doesn't allow someone under the age of twenty-one to consume or purchase alcohol. There is no other country listed that has a age limit of twenty-one to consume alcoholic beverages. But there are also many other circumstances that have to be taken into affect. Stated by (Engs & Hanson, 1998) If you are above the age of eighteen you are legally allowed to vote, purchase tobacco products, get enrolled in the military, get married without the parent consent, there are number of things that you are allowed to do when you turn eighteen. Since passing this law there has been no major changes. That's one thing I think the government may have to take into consideration if they are ever going to pass this law to lower the age. Since the drinking age has been raised to twenty-one, drinking has decreased.
