History of U.S. Presidents
All together, to date, there has been 42 Presidents. There seemed to be three main eras of presidency: forming our country, perfecting the way we run it, and advancing ourselves, globally and nationally. It all began with George Washington. He is considered to be the founding father of our nation by many people. He was born in 1732 in Virginia, and died in 1799. He was 56 years old when elected in 1789. At first, George was reluctant to take on the task of being President. Before he left for his inauguration, he wrote, "About ten o'clock I bade adieu to Mt. Vernon, to private life, and to domestic felicity, and with a mind oppressed with more anxious and painful sensations than I care to express, set out for New York."With this statement, Washington is saying that he knows it will be a hard road to travel, and that he will no longer be able to enjoy the right to secrecy, that all he does will be known, yet he still took the job. Washington took the oath of office on April 30th, 1789. Before being a president, he had been a plantation manager and a soldier. He had no real experience in government. When Jefferson had begun his presidency, the France crisis had passed. structure that would help future presidents. He worked to expose the further expansion of slavery, and blocked the annexation of Texas because he thought it would expand slave territory, and it might bring war with Mexico. Kennedy slowed the arms race, and quite possibly, stopped global nuclear war. He threatened to hang anyone that would rebel against the union. with branches in several states, but Henry Clay would not budge. It lowered tariffs, and helped the nation to develop a more "elastic" money supply that it needed badly. " He was hoping that this "Good Feeling" would eliminate political party rivalry. and Russia, and continued most of the New Deal and Fair Deal programs. Roosevelt was known as the "trust buster. He helped set up many conservation acts, added enormously to the national forests in the west. " Soon after the stock market crashed, beginning the Great Depression. He also vetoed a bill that would give pensions for disabilities not caused by military service. Congress suspended Chinese immigration for ten years. He was re-elected, and formed the "good neighbor" policy.
