Outsiders

I chose to write about Ponyboy because he is the most active character in the book and I know a lot about him. I like Pony because he does not try to act tough and can be himself.
Ponyboy Curtis is 14 years old. He is the main character and narrator. His parents were killed in a car crash, and now his older brother Darry looks after Pony and his 16 year old brother named Sodapop.
Ponyboy and his 2 older brothers are part of a gang called "Greasers". A Greaser is a person who was from the east side of town, had long greasy hair, and was poor. The rivals of the Greasers are a group of kids called "Socs". Socs are kids who are from the west side of town, drive nice cars, and are rich. There is a lot of tension between these two groups and they fight a lot.
Pony goes through many changes throughout the book. Towards the beginning of the book, Pony thought that Darry hated him and did not like having Pony around. Pony found out at the hospital that Darry really did love him when he saw Darry crying. Pony also thought that all Socs were the same, rich kids with no problems and no feelings. Pony finds out after he meets Cherry that not all Socs are like that. He realizes that they are people with feelings too. Also, after he talks to Randy in Randy's car Pony sees that when you get to know them, the Socs are good people.
Pony has lived a very rough life so far. Four people that were very close to him have died by the time he was 14. Pony's parents died, Johnny died, and Dally died. But, after all he went through Pony managed to make two new friends, become closer with his brothers, and become a hero.
